Grades

What do kup and dan mean?

Kup are the student grades. You start as a white belt and count downwards — 10th kup is the first grade, 1st kup the last one before black belt. The colour of the belt shows how far you have come.

Dan are the master grades, from black belt upwards. Dan gradings are held at Taekwondo Life Academy, which the club is part of.

In training you address your instructor in Korean according to grade: 4th dan and above is Sabeum Nim, 1st–3rd dan is Kyosa Nim, and instructors with a kup grade are Tyogo Nim. Our grandmaster is addressed as Kwang Jang Nim.
