For students
Dojang etiquette
So that everyone has a good time training with us, there are a few rules we all follow. Here they are — and why they exist.
-
We are here to enjoy ourselves
Taekwondo is about discipline and the art of fighting. That does not mean it cannot be fun. We do not run the club like the military — but we do expect you to take it seriously and do your best in training.
-
Your dobok is clean and tidy
Out of consideration for the people training next to you, your dobok should not smell.
-
Bow to the dojang and greet the flag as you step in
We do it to mark that we have come here to train taekwondo.
-
If you are late, come up, bow to the instructor, and then join in
There may have been a message you missed that matters for the session.
-
Do not leave the hall during training without the instructor’s go-ahead
That includes going for a drink or to the toilet. It is mainly so the instructor knows where everyone is.
-
Address your instructor in Korean
4th dan and above: Sabeum Nim. 1st–3rd dan: Kyosa Nim. Kup grades: Tyogo Nim. Our grandmaster is addressed as Kwang Jang Nim.
-
When you stand in gibon-joonbi-seogi (ready stance), be ready
That means no adjusting your clothes, picking your nose or anything else. Imagine you are in a fight and need to fix your hair first…
-
Stay where you are while something is being explained to someone else
Hold the stance until the instructor says otherwise. That way we do not spend half the session starting the exercise over because people have drifted off.
-
We concentrate on the training
Save the joking and chatting for afterwards.
In short: show courtesy and respect for your instructor, for the training hall and for everyone else training. And you can expect the same in return — that the instructor treats every student with respect and takes their level into account.
