For students

The belts

An overview of every belt in the club: mon, kup and dan. So you can see what the colours and tips mean, and where you are yourself.

The club uses three belt systems: mon for the youngest, kup for students and dan for black belts. Here you can see all of them, from the lowest to the highest.

A belt is more than a colour. The tips at the end of the belt show how far you have come within the same colour. The belt also decides where you stand when we line up.

Mon

The mon belts

Mon is the club’s own system for children of about 5–12. A mon belt is white with the colour of the grade as a stripe down the middle. When you are ready, you move on from mon to the kup system.

From the highest grade down to the lowest.

  1. Black mon
  2. Red mon with three black tips
  3. Red mon with two black tips
  4. Red mon with one black tip
  5. Red mon
  6. Blue mon with red tip
  7. Blue mon
  8. Green mon
  9. Orange mon
  10. Yellow mon

Kup

The kup belts

Kup are the student grades. You start with a white belt and count downwards: 10th kup is the lowest grade and 1st kup is the highest before black belt. The colour goes from white through yellow, orange, green and blue to red, and along the way the belt gets tips in another colour.

From 1st kup (highest) down to the white belt (start).

  1. 1st kup – red with three black tips
  2. 2nd kup – red with two black tips
  3. 3rd kup – red with one black tip
  4. 4th kup – red belt
  5. 5th kup – blue with red tip
  6. 6th kup – blue belt
  7. 7th kup – green belt
  8. 8th kup – orange belt
  9. 9th kup – yellow belt
  10. 10th kup – white with yellow tip
  11. White belt (start)

Dan

The dan belts (black belt)

Dan is black belt and above. You begin as 1st dan, and for every dan the belt gets one more gold tip, up to 9th dan. A black belt is not the end of the journey, but the beginning of a new one.

From 9th dan (highest) down to 1st dan.

  1. 9th dan – black belt
  2. 8th dan – black belt
  3. 7th dan – black belt
  4. 6th dan – black belt
  5. 5th dan – black belt
  6. 4th dan – black belt
  7. 3rd dan – black belt
  8. 2nd dan – black belt
  9. 1st dan – black belt

When we line up

How we stand in four rows

When we line up for training, the students stand in four rows. Looking at the students, the highest belt stands at the far right of the row, and it goes down towards the left.

Dan is the highest, so the black belts stand first. Then come the kup belts, from 1st kup to 10th kup (white with a yellow tip), and after the yellow tip come the mon belts, from black mon down to yellow mon. The white belts stand last of all. When a row is full, you carry on in the next row.

If you are new and have a white belt, you stand last of all, after yellow mon. Every time you get a new belt, you move one step forward in the line.

An example: 24 students, one of each belt, in four rows. The first place is top right.
  1. Row 1
    1. 3rd kup – red with one black tip
    2. 2nd kup – red with two black tips
    3. 1st kup – red with three black tips
    4. 1st dan – black belt
    5. 2nd dan – black belt
    6. 3rd dan – black belt
  2. Row 2
    1. 9th kup – yellow belt
    2. 8th kup – orange belt
    3. 7th kup – green belt
    4. 6th kup – blue belt
    5. 5th kup – blue with red tip
    6. 4th kup – red belt
  3. Row 3
    1. Red mon
    2. Red mon with one black tip
    3. Red mon with two black tips
    4. Red mon with three black tips
    5. Black mon
    6. 10th kup – white with yellow tip
  4. Row 4
    1. White belt (start)
    2. Yellow mon
    3. Orange mon
    4. Green mon
    5. Blue mon
